The Kwahu West Municipal Assembly is actively reclaiming land degraded by illegal mining (galamsey) to restore ecosystems and ensure safety. Hon. Tamimu Halidu, the Kwahu West Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), made this known during an inspection tour of reclamation sites.

The Assembly has begun reclaiming abandoned hazardous pits, focusing on planting trees and restoring polluted water bodies and forests. About 50 acres of degraded land have been reclaimed so far. Halidu emphasized that traditional leaders must protect the restored areas to ensure a safe environment, given the high cost of reclamation.

"We need to work together to safeguard our environment and prevent these areas from being exploited again," Halidu urged, highlighting the Assembly's commitment to the reclamation efforts.

Mr. Yaw Agyei, the Reclamation Project Contractor, noted that some reclaimed sites have been reinvaded by galamseyers, compromising the work. He appealed for additional financial support to extend reclamation efforts to more affected sites, clarifying that some residents mistakenly see reclamation projects as galamsey activities.

The Kwahu Obomeng Chief, Nana Effah Opinamang III, has pledged support for the reclamation efforts, emphasizing the need for community involvement in protecting the environment. The Assembly is calling on philanthropists and well-widers to support their efforts to reclaim more degraded lands.
