E/R: Abuakwa North MP, Bread and Bounty Foundation Celebrate Widows and Widowers Ahead of Mother’s Day

The Member of Parliament for Abuakwa North Constituency in Ghana’s Eastern Region, Hon. Nana Ampaw Kwame Addo-Frempong, popularly known as Chief Buffalo, in collaboration with the Bread and Bounty Foundation, hosted about 500 widows and widowers from the Akyem Old Tafo and Akyem Anyinasin communities on Saturday, May 9, 2026.

The event, held at the Akyem Old Tafo Awansa Palace, was filled with music, dancing, food, and drinks as participants celebrated joyfully on the eve of this year’s Mother’s Day. Attendees were also presented with packs of groceries at the end of the programme.

Present at the ceremony were the Chairman of the Abuakwa North Constituency New Patriotic Party (NPP), Alhaji Siedu Ibrahim, together with other constituency executives, the Assembly Member for Old Tafo Ahenbronom Electoral Area, Hon. Eric Moore, as well as members of the media.

Speaking on the sidelines of the event, Hon. Nana Ampaw Kwame Addo-Frempong described the gathering as the second edition of the initiative, following a successful maiden event held at Akyem New Tafo. He noted that women play a crucial role in national development and should be empowered as drivers of growth, a principle he said was inspired by advice from former President John Agyekum Kufuor.

The MP also used the occasion to raise concerns over the increasing rate of drug abuse in the Abuakwa North Constituency. He urged participants to help amplify the campaign against substance abuse in their communities to help curb the menace.

Hon. Addo-Frempong further called for unity among constituents to accelerate development, citing his role as a member of Parliament’s Roads Sub-Committee, which he said has contributed to road construction projects within the constituency.

On her part, the Chief Executive Officer of Bread and Bounty Foundation, Mrs. Dorcia Addo-Frempong, stated that the initiative is now an annual commitment, with the next edition scheduled for December 2026 in Akyem Osiem and surrounding communities. She expressed the foundation’s ambition to eventually expand the programme across the Eastern Region.

Mrs. Addo-Frempong emphasized that the foundation’s mission is to assure widows and widowers that they are not alone, but are supported and valued by society. She added that the organization is committed to creating employment opportunities, improving access to healthcare, and building stronger community ties to promote development.

She further appealed to well-meaning individuals, civil society organizations, non-governmental organizations, and government agencies to support the foundation’s activities to advance socio-economic development in the country.

Some beneficiaries who spoke to the media expressed gratitude to the Member of Parliament and the Bread and Bounty Foundation for their generosity, noting that the event brought happiness and renewed hope to their lives.
