Amenfi Central MP Advocates Sustainable Mining and Agriculture for Economic Growth
The Member of Parliament for Amenfi Central, Hon. Joana Gyan Cudjoe, has reaffirmed her commitment to promoting responsible mining and agriculture as twin pillars of economic growth for her constituency and Ghana at large.
Speaking in an interview on Power FM/TV XYZ today, the legislator clarified that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is not against mining, but firmly against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, which devastates water bodies and the environment. She explained that small-scale mining should not be confused with illegal mining, stressing that “someone might have all the required documents to mine but still fail to do the right thing.”
Hon. Gyan noted that since assuming office as MP, she has spearheaded the removal of illegal miners operating along the roadsides of her constituency. She added that she has also engaged the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources to introduce a new initiative dubbed “Green Gold”—a collaborative effort aimed at ensuring proper and environmentally friendly mining practices.
Beyond mining, the MP emphasized that Amenfi Central cannot rely solely on gold as its economic backbone. As a member of Parliament’s Food and Agriculture Committee, she revealed that she has initiated several agricultural projects, including fisheries and vegetable farming. She highlighted her support for women in the constituency, many of whom she has organized and employed in vegetable cultivation, which she described as a means of strengthening the local economy.
Hon. Gyan further encouraged miners to adopt modern, innovative, and technical methods of mining to minimize environmental destruction. She urged all prospective miners to consult the Minerals Commission for proper documentation and guidance before engaging in mining.
She concluded by assuring her readiness to continue empowering the youth of Amenfi Central with employability skills, especially in agriculture, to reduce unemployment and boost the constituency’s economic growth.
