E/R:Okyeman Nifahene Bans Mining in Asiakwa, Issues Two-Week Ultimatum
The Nifahene of Okyeman under the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Council, Daasebre Dr. Twum Ampofo II, has imposed a total ban on mining activities in Asiakwa and its surrounding areas in the Eastern Region.
This decisive action follows an earlier restriction on mining along river bodies, in line with Okyenhene Osagyefuo Ofori Panin’s directive to protect the Birim River, Supong River, and other water bodies from pollution caused by illegal mining.
Daasebre Twum Ampofo II, who also serves as Asiakwahene, justified the ban, stating that mining has brought no significant benefit to the community and has instead caused environmental destruction. He issued a two-week ultimatum for all miners to vacate the area, reclaim degraded lands, and remove machinery. He warned that any excavators left behind after the deadline would be set ablaze.
He further highlighted the harmful effects of toxic chemicals used in mining, which degrade soil quality and make it unsuitable for farming and other sustainable activities. While acknowledging the economic impact, he emphasized that mining activities in Asiakwa must be restructured to ensure long-term benefits for future generations.
During a site inspection on March 20, 2025, a news team observed that some miners had vacated while others had started land reclamation efforts. However, some continued mining despite the ban.
Several miners praised Asiakwahene’s commitment to protecting natural resources but urged him to reconsider the total ban, arguing that mining provides jobs for the youth and helps prevent social vices.
