E/R:Hajia Mariam Mohammed Crowned Development Queen of Quarshie, Rallies Community for Collective Growth

Quarshie, Eastern Region — August 12, 2025

In a colourful and well-attended durbar at Quarshie in the West Akim Municipality, Hajia Mariam Mohammed — President and Chairperson of Voice of the Nation and General Deputy Secretary of the African Development and Monitoring Group (ADAM-GH) — was honoured with the prestigious title of Development Queen.

The ceremony, chaired by Osabarima Ateabisa Kantinka Pobi Asomanin, Chief of Asamankese, brought together traditional leaders, dignitaries, investors, and residents. It underscored the urgent need for unity and shared responsibility in driving the socio-economic transformation of the community.

Speaking to the gathering after her coronation, Hajia Mariam stressed that development is a collective duty and cannot be achieved by one person alone.

“Community development is not for one person but for all. Everyone should contribute their quota — not necessarily with money, but with time, skills, and effort. Our forefathers built thriving communities through communal labour, and we must revive that spirit,” she urged.

Hajia Mariam also outlined her key priorities, with a strong focus on youth empowerment through capacity building, skills training, and job creation. She revealed that she has already engaged with investors from the United States, who were present at the durbar, to initiate major development projects in Quarshie. She further appealed for peace and unity, noting that a supportive and harmonious environment is essential for any meaningful progress.

The Odokro of Quarshie, Nana John Benjamin Rockson Quarshie, popularly known as JB, described the new Development Queen’s honour as well-deserved, praising her courage and forward-thinking leadership. He pledged the community’s full support to her initiatives. However, Nana Quarshie also raised concerns over pressing local issues, including rampant land litigation, which he said threatens peace and security, as well as deplorable road conditions and inadequate access to healthcare.

To address governance and coordination matters, a 12-member administrative committee was inaugurated to oversee community affairs and collaborate on development projects.

Some residents echoed the concerns of their leaders, lamenting the poor road network, ineffective health services, and insecurity linked to land degradation. They expressed optimism that under Hajia Mariam’s leadership, these challenges could finally receive urgent attention.

The durbar attracted notable figures including Dr. J. S. Anan, a diplomat; Dr. Betty Bannerman, Quarshie Abusua Panin; the Asamankese Divisional Crime Officer with his team; as well as the general public and members of the press. The day ended with a renewed sense of hope that Quarshie’s transformation was not only possible but already taking shape — with its people, leaders, and new Development Queen working hand in hand.
