E/R:MP Duke Ofori Atta Leads Charge for Cleaner Communities in Fanteakwa South

Ehiamankyene, Fanteakwa South — As part of activities to mark World Environment Day 2025, the Member of Parliament for Fanteakwa South, Hon. Duke Ofori Atta, has reaffirmed his commitment to promoting cleanliness and environmental sustainability across the constituency.

Addressing students, teachers, and community members at the event held in Ehiamankyene, the MP appealed to his constituents to uphold the principle that “cleanliness is next to godliness.” He stressed that the health and future of communities depend heavily on maintaining clean and safe environments.

To inspire change at the grassroots level, Hon. Ofori Atta announced plans to launch “Leopard Clubs” in basic schools across the constituency. These clubs will focus on environmental education and leadership among the youth. He also unveiled a proposed “Cleanest Town Challenge”—an initiative that will reward communities that maintain high sanitation standards.

“I believe young students must lead the way in keeping our towns clean and free from plastic waste,” the MP said. “Learn about your environment, understand it, and protect it—not just for today, but for your future.”

He also urged the students to explore recycling and innovate new uses for plastic waste, while reminding them of the importance of conserving forests and water bodies.

District Chief Executive Hon. Mercy Akosua Korang echoed the MP’s sentiments, encouraging students to take the fight against plastic waste seriously. She emphasized that poor sanitation contributes to illness and disease, stating that “a healthy people make a healthy nation.”

A moment of celebration came when a Class 4 pupil creatively showcased a dress made of sachet rubber during a fashion parade, drawing applause from the audience. The event, themed “Beat Plastic Pollution,” was supported by Adwinsa Publications, with CEO Mr. Kwaku Oppong-Amponsah donating reading materials, writing pads, and certificates to participating schools.

Mr. Oppong-Amponsah highlighted the importance of starting environmental education with children.

“Our future depends on how well we train the next generation to respect and protect the environment,” he stated. “That is why we partnered with the MP to support this initiative.”

In his remarks, Mr. Harrison Yangbe, the District Environmental Analyst, took a strong stance against illegal mining and its harmful effects on the environment. He called on chiefs and opinion leaders to promote responsible mining practices to protect land and water resources.
