E/R: Transeco Minerals in Akyem Saaman Cleared of Illegal Mining Allegations

A recent media visit to Transeco Minerals and Mining Limited, located in Akyem Saaman in the Eastern Region, has revealed that the company is not engaged in illegal mining activities, contrary to misinformation circulating on social media and in some media outlets.

Mr. E.K. Gyamerah, the General Manager of the company, explained that Transeco Minerals is a duly registered mining firm operating as a model center for responsible and sustainable mining practices. The company serves as a training ground where others come to learn proper mining techniques.

During the tour, journalists observed that previously mined lands had been successfully reclaimed and restored. Crops such as cassava and coconut had been planted and handed back to the rightful landowners. As part of its environmental restoration efforts, 300 trees are currently being planted on sections of the reclaimed lands to promote ecological recovery and long-term sustainability.

Transeco also operates a self-constructed recycling dam used for gold washing, entirely free of harmful chemicals, setting a standard for eco-friendly mining practices.

In addition to environmental stewardship, the company boasts modern infrastructure including its own machine shop, fully equipped mechanical workshop, and an on-site clinic staffed by certified medical practitioners who provide healthcare services to both employees and the surrounding community.

The company has further demonstrated its commitment to corporate social responsibility by training and employing local youth, building bungalows for medical doctors, and donating laptops and furniture to the community hospital. A community development fund has also been established, with Transeco contributing 1% of its revenue to support local projects.

However, Mr. Gyamerah raised concerns about encroachment on the company’s land. He explained that after the community requested and was granted access to 30 acres for regulated community mining, some individuals unlawfully extended their operations onto an additional 30 acres, causing severe environmental degradation.

Local chiefs and residents who spoke to the media confirmed that Transeco Minerals and Mining Limited conducts its operations responsibly and maintains a positive, cooperative relationship with the Saaman community.
