Government Intensifies Efforts to Combat Illegal Mining with Operation Halt
The Government of Ghana has announced new measures to strengthen its efforts in the fight against illegal small-scale mining, also known as "galamsey." This renewed commitment is part of the ongoing initiative called "Operation Halt," led by the Ghana Armed Forces, aimed at ridding the country’s river bodies of all illegal mining activities.
In a press release issued by the Ministry of Information on October 9, 2024, the government emphasized its determination to address the long-standing problem of illegal mining that has severely affected the nation’s natural resources. The latest phase of the operation will be conducted in collaboration with the Small-Scale Miners Association of Ghana, highlighting a united front in the battle against this environmental menace.
The government reassured the public that river bodies and forest reserves will remain classified as red zones, strictly prohibiting any form of mining activity in these areas. This approach aims to preserve the ecological balance and prevent further degradation of Ghana’s natural landscapes.
Minister of Information, Fatimatu Abubakar, who signed the release, reiterated the government’s unwavering commitment to tackling illegal small-scale mining. She called on all stakeholders, including community leaders, civil society organizations, and citizens, to actively participate in the campaign against this illicit practice.
The intensified measures signify the government's resolve to safeguard the environment and ensure that future generations inherit clean water bodies and unspoiled forest reserves.
