E/R:Career Guidance Initiative Empowers High School Students Ahead of WAEC Exams in Kwahu West

Kwahu West, Eastern Region – As part of efforts to guide final-year students in choosing the right academic and career paths, the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC), in collaboration with the Kwahu West Municipal Assembly, has organized a Career Guidance and Counseling Programme for high school students in the municipality.

With their WAEC examinations approaching, students were introduced to a variety of career options through interactions with representatives from top tertiary institutions, including the University of Ghana, UPSA, and the University of Environment and Sustainable Development. The event aimed to help students align their strengths, interests, and aspirations with the appropriate university programmes and career paths.

Mr. Michael Agyemang, the Regional Planning Officer at the Eastern Regional Coordinating Council, explained that the initiative, which began two years ago, was designed to help students make informed decisions about their academic and professional futures.

“This engagement is meant to expose students to the right academic programmes and help them make informed career choices,” Mr. Agyemang stated.

Speaking at the event, Hon. Halidu Tamimu, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Kwahu West, emphasized the importance of early career education. He acknowledged the challenges students face when choosing a career without proper guidance and noted that multiple factors—including teacher influence, societal expectations, and parental decisions—affect students’ career decisions.

“Career education should begin at the primary school level to help children understand the world of work early. This will ensure a smoother transition through the education system and better career choices later on,” Hon. Tamimu said.

He further urged that career guidance programs be intensified in both basic and second-cycle schools to empower students to explore their personal interests, develop study habits, and gain self-awareness.

“We must allow students to take charge of their decisions, but with proper guidance. This initiative is a major step toward equipping our youth for the future,” he added.

The career orientation programme forms part of a broader educational strategy to prepare students for both higher education and the job market, ensuring that young people in Kwahu West and beyond make meaningful and fulfilling career choices.
