E/R:Worapon Sees Surge in School Enrollment as New Classroom Block Transforms Education

Education in Worapon, a community in the Yilo Krobo Municipality of Ghana's Eastern Region, has received a major boost following the construction of a modern six-unit classroom block. This development, completed in just six months at a cost of ¢458,000, has significantly improved learning conditions and led to an increase in student enrollment.

The initiative was spearheaded by the New Juaben Cocoa Farmers Union in collaboration with Cocoa Life, as part of their corporate social responsibility efforts to support education in rural communities. During one of their meetings in Worapon, the union’s president, Mr. Thomas Agyei, observed that schoolchildren were studying under a dilapidated pavilion. Moved by the poor learning conditions, the union decided to convert the pavilion into a fully furnished classroom block to provide a conducive environment for teaching and learning.

Addressing the chiefs and people of Worapon at the official handing-over ceremony, Mr. Thomas Agyei urged parents to prioritize their children's education by ensuring they attend school regularly. He also emphasized the importance of maintenance culture, advising the community to take good care of the new facility to ensure its longevity.

The Yilo Krobo Municipal Education Director, Mr. John Kwame Gadesu, expressed deep appreciation to the New Juaben Cocoa Farmers Union and their partners for their generous support. He encouraged other organizations and philanthropists to emulate their example by investing in education and other human-centered projects that would benefit communities.

The headmaster of the school, Mr. Alexander Ahulu, also shared his gratitude for the new infrastructure, noting that it had already led to an increase in enrollment as more parents were now eager to send their children to school. However, he highlighted some remaining challenges, including the need for ceiling installations and fans to improve ventilation in classrooms during hot afternoons. Additionally, he appealed for computers to enhance ICT education and equip students with essential digital skills.

The newly constructed classroom block stands as a testament to the power of collaboration and community-driven development. With improved facilities, increased student enrollment, and a renewed focus on education, Worapon is on the path to providing quality learning opportunities for its children, paving the way for a brighter future.
