E/R:Empowering the Future: Eastern Regional Free SHS Coordinator Champions TVET at Graduation Ceremony
Nana Ofosu Asante Twum, popularly known as Nana OAT, the Eastern Regional Free SHS Coordinator, has reaffirmed the importance of education, particularly Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), as a cornerstone for national development. Speaking at the graduation ceremony of the Do Wo Yonko Training Center, operated by the All Smile Together Foundation, an NGO based in Akyem Maase in the Abuakwa South Municipality of the Eastern Region of Ghana, Nana OAT emphasized the pivotal role TVET plays in fostering economic growth and technological advancement.
The ceremony, held on November 16, 2024, at the school’s premises, celebrated the achievements of 13 graduates in fashion design with Serwah Sandra emerging as the best student. Nana OAT used the platform to urge parents to take full advantage of the Free SHS and Free TVET policies introduced by the Nana Akufo-Addo and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia-led administration, reiterating that these programs are entirely free, contrary to misconceptions.
“Education is a process, not an event, and it fosters sustainable economic growth. In this technological era, students with strong academic performances are increasingly drawn to TVET programs such as computer engineering, construction, and fashion design, which align with global trends,” Nana OAT remarked.
He lauded the efforts of the Do Wo Yonko Training Center for addressing youth unemployment through skill-based training, describing their work as a crucial step toward sustainable development. Nana OAT assured the institution of his commitment to lobbying for government support through the Ministry of Education and its TVET Secretariat, led by Deputy Minister Prof. Kingsley Nyarko.
“With Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia poised to become the next president, we will work to ensure stronger collaboration, infrastructure expansion, and the introduction of additional courses to further enhance the impact of institutions like this,” he added.
Nana OAT also called on the youth to refrain from electoral violence, emphasizing the need for peaceful elections to safeguard the nation's progress.
Madam Akua Judith, Director of the All Smile Together Foundation, expressed her joy in witnessing the graduates' accomplishments. She highlighted the foundation’s commitment to providing free training to empower the youth with employable skills.
“Our mission is to foster self-reliance and socio-economic development in our communities. However, we need support from civil society, individuals, and the government to sustain and expand this program,” she said.
The ceremony concluded with the presentation of certificates and sewing machines to the graduates, enabling them to start their own businesses. Guests were treated to a vibrant display of creativity as the graduates showcased their skills through a fashion show featuring elegant wedding gowns, casual wear, jumpsuits, African prints, and more.
The event not only celebrated the graduates' achievements but also underscored the critical role of skill development in shaping the future of Ghana’s youth.
