The Asuogyaman District on Friday celebrated the 41st National Farmers’ Day with a colourful and well-attended durbar at the Boso Secondary and Technical School Park in the Boso-Gua Traditional Area of the Eastern Region. The event, which honoured the hard work and contribution of farmers to national development, was chaired by Oseadeayo Adu Kwaku II, Gyaasehene of the Boso-Gua Traditional Council, on behalf of His Majesty Nana Osei Nyarko III, Omanhene and Paramount Chief of the Boso-Gua Traditional Area. In attendance were the Member of Parliament for Asuogyaman, Hon. Thomas Nyarko Ampem, the District Chief Executive, Hon. Godwin Bobobee, the District Director of Agriculture, assembly members, heads of institutions, farmers, fisherfolk, poultry farmers, youth groups and media organizations.

Addressing the gathering, Oseadeayo Adu Kwaku II expressed profound gratitude to the tireless men and women whose labour sustains families and keeps the local economy vibrant. He praised farmers for their resilience in coping with climate challenges, rising input costs and shifting market conditions while continuing to feed communities within Asuogyaman and the nation at large. He stated that the achievements and stability of the district are firmly rooted in the dedication of its farmers and fisherfolk whose hard work forms the backbone of local livelihood and national food security.

The Gyaasehene commended government for its continuous support to the agricultural sector and welcomed the introduction of the new flagship programme, Nkokoo Nkiti Nkiti, which he described as a bold step capable of modernizing agriculture, creating jobs for the youth, strengthening food security and enhancing rural economic development. He emphasized that with appropriate support and effective implementation, the programme will significantly boost agricultural productivity in Asuogyaman.

He highlighted the rich agricultural potential of the Boso-Gua Traditional Area, where crops such as oil palm, cassava, maize and vegetables continue to flourish due to the fertile lands, while the Volta Lake supports a strong fishing industry that contributes massively to the district’s economy. He noted that agriculture in the area is not only an economic activity but also a heritage and source of pride for the people. He appealed to government and development partners for the establishment of oil palm and mango processing factories to enhance value addition and job creation, as well as fish processing units along the Volta Lake to improve hygiene and income levels in the fisheries sector. He also called for support for poultry farmers under the Nkokoo Nkiti Nkiti programme to reduce dependence on imported poultry products. Furthermore, he urged the District Chief Executive to assist Boso-Gua by mobilizing DRIP equipment to open access roads leading to the oil palm farms and to expedite the completion of ongoing works at the school park.

The celebration climaxed with the presentation of awards to distinguished farmers who excelled in various fields within the district.
