E/R: Abuakwa South NADMO Embarks on Inspection Tour to Curb Destructive Mining Activities

Officers from the Abuakwa South Municipal office of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) in the Eastern Region, led by the Municipal Director, Mr. Aikins Ofori, have embarked on a monitoring tour across the municipality to assess the impact of mining activities in the area.

The inspection, conducted on 5th November 2025, took the team to several communities including Kyebi Akwadum, Potrase, Akyem Apedwa, and Akyem Asafo.

During the visit, it was observed that many miners had blocked major waterways, while others had diverted river courses to facilitate their operations. At Potrase, the team witnessed particularly alarming scenes where miners had dug pits beneath high-tension electricity poles and in the middle of access roads leading to farmlands and nearby villages, severely disrupting movement and endangering lives.

A local farmer, identified as Nana Yaw, lamented that he can no longer transport his farm produce due to the destruction of access roads, causing severe post-harvest losses. He appealed to the authorities to intervene urgently to protect farmers’ livelihoods.

Speaking to the media after the tour, Mr. Aikins Ofori expressed grave concern over the extent of environmental degradation caused by illegal mining. He called on state security agencies, particularly the National Anti-Illegal Mining Secretariat (NAIMOS), to take swift and decisive action to address the menace before it escalates further.
