E/R:Akyem Maase Chief Welcomes NADMO Director, Backs Disaster Risk Reduction Campaign and Agriculture Drive

The Abuakwa South Director of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), Mr. Aikins Ofori, on Sunday, 28th September 2025, paid a courtesy call on Osabarima Adu Asare Bosompen I, Chief of Akyem Maase, in the Eastern Region, during the celebration of Akwasidae.

The visit was to formally introduce himself to the traditional authority and the elders of the town, as well as to brief them on the upcoming International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (IDDR) 2025, scheduled to be observed at Akyem Maase on 6th October 2025.

Mr. Ofori praised the Chief for his proactive leadership in promoting agriculture over illegal mining activities, which remain a pressing concern in many parts of the Eastern Region. He particularly highlighted the efforts of a local yam farmer who has successfully cultivated several acres of yam, describing such ventures as commendable and worthy of support. The NADMO Director assured the traditional council that his office has plans to collaborate with farmers and community leaders to strengthen agriculture as a sustainable alternative to destructive practices like galamsey.

In his remarks, Osabarima Adu Asare Bosompen I warmly welcomed the NADMO Director and pledged the full support of the traditional council towards the forthcoming disaster risk reduction program. He emphasized that disaster preparedness and sustainable land use were crucial for safeguarding the future of the community.

The chief further announced his personal commitment to expand agriculture by allocating more land to the yam farmer to boost production and enhance food security for the people of Akyem Maase and beyond.

Osabarima Adu Asare Bosompen I also used the occasion to express gratitude to his counterpart, Osabarima Atta Appiah Korang, Chief of Akyem Anyinasin, for his tireless efforts in securing their common borders against illegal miners. According to him, this collaborative effort has been instrumental in protecting their lands from galamsey operators and ensuring that the people can focus on farming and other sustainable livelihoods.

However, he expressed grave concern over the activities of illegal sand winners, whom he accused of degrading farmlands and leaving behind deep pits that endanger lives and destroy arable land. He appealed to Mr. Ofori and NADMO to step in and work with relevant authorities to regulate sand-winning activities in the community.

The meeting symbolized a strong partnership between traditional leadership and state institutions in tackling both environmental challenges and developmental needs, setting the tone for a united front in disaster risk management and sustainable rural development.
